It was the dream of a few Periodontists, who were members of the Indian Dental Association (IDA) cochin that culminated in the birth of Cochin Periodontists Society (COPS). Dr.Raju kurien Ninan, Dr.Aju Thomas, Dr.Noorudin, Dr.Siby and Dr.Sajil used to meet together during the Monthly IDA meetings. During these meetings they expressed a need to bring a platform so that Periodontists practicing in the city and near by can get together and interact. Many of them had known others by names only and a few did not know that others who later joined existed at all!

They decided to call a meeting. Invitation was sent by phone. All who received calls were advised to invite their Periodontist friends who were practicing in the city or nearby. This resulted in meeting of the following eleven Periodontists on 3rd august 2004 at 7.00PM at Hotel Abad Metro, Kochi
 

It was decided during this meeting that a gettogether comprising of Scientific deliberation and fellowship should be conducted bimonthly. Each one was advised to invite their friends into this gathering.

After the initial meeting there used to be regular bimonthly meetings. After a few meetings some of the members expressed a need to make our gathering official by registering as a society and invite other Periodontists from all over Kerala to join this forum. All members unanimously agreed to this. Dr.Raju Kurien Ninan proposed the name of the Society as Cochin Periodontists Society or in short COPS. He also designed the logo for the society. It was decided to allow dentists other than Periodontists to the society as associate members. It was decided to conduct six executive meetings at bimonthly intervals to discuss COPS matters and six Professional enrichment programme (PEP’s) during a COPS calendar year starting in April and ending in March.

The members present for the meeting on 14-11-2004 at Cochin Gymkhana proposed the names of the office bearers of COPS for the year 2005 – 2006.

The first Annual General body meeting of COPS was at Cochin Gymkhana on 07-12-2004. Family new year celebration of COPS members were conducted on 20-01-2005 at Cochin Gymkhana.

It was decided to have a Mega launch programme of COPS with full media coverage. On 17-04-2005 at Hotel Casino, Hon. Justice Dr.Narayana Kurup formally inaugurated COPS in a glittering ceremony well attended by more than a hundred distinguished invitees. The formal inauguration was followed by a professional enrichment programme by one of the most renowned Periodontist and a teacher to many, DR.B.R.R Varma.
